Art Mat, Custom Mat, Photo Mat, Picture Mat, Precut Mat - all define the board that separates the actual art work from the frame, with a border of varying widths.

Beveled or Bevel Cut - refers to the way the knife blade is run thru the mat during the cutting of the inner opening. Most mats are cut with a 45 degree angle for visual, making the mat appear thicker than it really is.

Custom Mat - a mat specially cut to the dimensions of your choice. Usually cut within 3-4 working days.

Double Mat - two mats, one over layed upon the other, with the bottom mat cut 1/4th of an inch (on all 4 sides) smaller than the actual print and the top mat 3/8th of an inch (on all 4 sides) larger than the bottom mat and usually of a different color for visual purposes.

Mat Opening, Inner Opening, Mat Window & Window - refer to the opening cut into the mat (usually centered) where the picture lays behind. This 'window' usually overlaps 1/8th to 1/4 of an inch of the artwork on all 4 sides.

Oval Mat - is a mat that is rectangular in shape on the outside dimension with an oval window cut on the inside. Used for Portraits or single objects that would benefit from this shape.
